Terms of Service

Version 1.0 · Effective October 15, 2026

This is a reference translation. The Japanese version prevails.
Contents

Article 1 (Scope)

  1. These Terms apply to all relationships between us and users concerning the use of the Service.
  2. Purchases of paid services are also governed by the seller's purchase terms (Purchase Terms (JPY/USD) or Purchase Terms (TWD)). If the purchase terms and these Terms differ, the purchase terms prevail for purchases, payments, points and refunds.
  3. The Plans page and other explanations we publish in the Service form part of these Terms.

Article 2 (Definitions)

  • "User": anyone who uses the Service, including people without an account
  • "Member": a user who has registered an account
  • "Your content": photos, text, audio and other information you upload, enter or send to the Service
  • "AI-generated content": scan results, readings, translations, explanations, questions, answers, audio, reports and other information the Service generates using AI
  • "Points": the unit that measures use of features involving AI processing
  • "Seller": the seller of paid services (us for purchases in JPY or USD; 哇哇科技股份有限公司 for purchases in TWD)

Article 3 (Accounts)

  1. You register with an email address or an account from an external service we accept. Keep your registration information accurate and up to date.
  2. An account may be used only by the person who registered it, for their own learning. You may not let others use, lend, transfer, sell or share your account.
  3. You are responsible for keeping your login details safe. If you learn that someone else is using your account without permission, contact us immediately.
  4. To prevent misuse, we may limit the number of devices that can be signed in at the same time and the number of simultaneous lessons, and may ask you to sign in again, for example after logins from several countries in a short time.
  5. Minors must have a parent's or legal guardian's consent to use the Service.

Article 4 (The Service)

  1. The Service offers Japanese-learning features such as scanning Japanese materials you photograph or upload, translations, readings, read-aloud, quizzes, review, a dictionary, kana and other practice, lessons with an AI Sensei (voice and text) and writing checks.
  2. Some features are free; others require a paid service or points. Features and conditions are shown on the Plans page.
  3. We may add or change features to improve the Service. Changes to paid services that are unfavorable to users follow the procedures in the purchase terms.

Article 5 (Use of AI and AI-generated content)

  1. The Service uses AI provided by OpenAI, L.L.C. and other companies. For AI processing, your content (including photos, text and audio) is sent to those companies. See the Privacy Policy for details.
  2. The Senseis in the Service (such as Haruka-sensei) are AI, not humans. The Service shows "AI" next to their names.
  3. AI-generated content is part of the Service's learning materials. We are responsible for keeping the materials accurate, and when we are told about an error (through "Report wrong reading" or by email) or otherwise learn of one, we will correct or remove it promptly. Correction deadlines and point refunds for users of paid services follow the purchase terms.
  4. We do not guarantee that using the Service will lead to passing any particular exam.
  5. You may freely use AI-generated content for your own learning.
  6. Shared explanations: questions you enter in "Ask by text" and "Highlight explanation", and the AI's answers (except answers personalized for you), are stored as shared explanations in a form that does not identify you, and are reused to answer users (including you) who ask the same question. Word meanings and example sentences taken from them may be added to the dictionary. Writing checks, web page summaries, the content of your photos and pages, and lesson content are not stored as shared explanations.
  7. We do not use your content to train AI models.
  8. If you use a feature paid with your own OpenAI key, the key is stored in your device's browser and is not sent to or stored on our servers. (If we later offer to keep keys for you, we will explain it separately and ask for your consent.)

Article 6 (Fees and points)

  1. Free features and free points are shown on the Plans page. Free points cannot be exchanged for cash or transferred.
  2. Prices, points, cancellation and refunds for paid services follow the purchase terms.
  3. Points cannot be moved between accounts and expire when you delete your account. However, you can request a refund of unused paid points that are refundable under the purchase terms before deleting your account.

Article 7 (Your content)

  1. Copyright and other rights in your content remain with you or the rightful owner.
  2. You warrant that you own the rights to your content, have the necessary permission from the rights holder, or are using it within a lawful scope such as private use under copyright law. Upload photos of textbooks, workbooks and books only as needed for your own study.
  3. You grant us a free license to copy, adapt, transmit and store your content to the extent needed to provide and maintain the Service (including AI processing, sending it to our service providers, and investigating problems). We do not publish your content without your permission.
  4. If we receive a claim that your content infringes a third party's rights and reasonably judge that it may, we may delete all or part of it or make it unavailable. Send infringement claims to max@wowwow.tw.
  5. If you upload a photo showing personal information such as a name or address, cover those parts as needed.

Article 8 (Information made public)

If you set a display name and take part in public features such as leaderboards, your display name and results in that feature are shown to other users. If you do not want this, do not set a display name.

Article 9 (Prohibited conduct)

You must not:

  • break the law or act against public order or morals
  • infringe others' copyright, portrait rights, privacy or other rights
  • impersonate others or register false information
  • transfer, lend, sell or share an account
  • access the Service without authorization, put excessive load on our servers or networks, or use programs to access the Service or collect information automatically
  • get around limits on points, daily usage, free benefits or the like, for example by creating multiple accounts
  • give input to the AI to generate illegal or harmful content, obtain others' personal information, or for other improper purposes
  • redistribute information from the Service for commercial purposes without our permission
  • buy paid services by misrepresenting where you live
  • interfere with the operation of the Service or cause disadvantage to other users or third parties
  • do anything similar to the above

Article 10 (Suspension)

  1. If you breach these Terms and the breach is serious, or you do not correct it within a reasonable period after we ask you to, we may, after notifying you, suspend all or part of your use of the Service or delete your account. In urgent cases, such as unauthorized access or risk of serious harm to others, we may notify you afterwards.
  2. Refunds for paid services in these cases follow the purchase terms.

Article 11 (Interruption and termination of the Service)

  1. We may temporarily interrupt all or part of the Service for maintenance, failures, disasters or other unavoidable reasons. As a rule, we announce planned maintenance in the Service and email members at least 7 days in advance, except in emergencies.
  2. If we end the Service, we announce it in the Service and email members at least 60 days before the end date. Refunds for unused paid periods follow the purchase terms.

Article 12 (Deleting your account)

  1. You can leave the Service and ask us to delete your account at any time by the method we specify (currently by email to max@wowwow.tw).
  2. When your account is deleted, your content, learning records and points are deleted and cannot be restored.
  3. Transaction records we must keep by law (orders, receipts and invoices, Taiwan e-invoices, consent records, etc.) are kept for the legally required period even after your account is deleted.

Article 13 (Personal information)

We handle your personal information in accordance with the Privacy Policy.

Article 14 (Intellectual property)

Rights in the Service's software, design, dictionary, example sentences and other content (other than your content) belong to us or the rightful owners. Data used under third-party licenses is subject to the conditions on the Credits page. You may use these for your own learning.

Article 15 (Our liability)

  1. We compensate you for damage caused by reasons attributable to us.
  2. If the damage is caused by our ordinary negligence, we compensate only ordinary and direct damage actually incurred, up to the total fees you paid us in the 12 months up to and including the month in which the cause occurred (or JPY 10,000 if that total is less).
  3. Paragraph 2 does not apply if we acted intentionally or with gross negligence, or to the extent it is invalid under the Consumer Contract Act of Japan or other laws.
  4. These Terms do not limit your rights under Taiwan's Consumer Protection Act or other mandatory laws of the place where you live.

Article 16 (Changes to these Terms)

  1. We may change these Terms under Article 548-4 of the Civil Code of Japan.
  2. Before a change takes effect, we announce the new content and its effective date in the Service. For important changes unfavorable to users, we announce them and email members at least 30 days before they take effect.

Article 17 (Notices)

We give notices by posting them in the Service or emailing your registered address. An email notice is deemed received when it would normally arrive.

Article 18 (No assignment)

You may not transfer your position, rights or obligations under these Terms to a third party or use them as security.

Article 19 (Severability)

If any part of these Terms is found invalid or unenforceable by law, the rest remains in effect.

Article 20 (Language)

The Japanese version of these Terms is the original, and translations are provided for reference. If they differ, the Japanese version prevails; however, where interpretation is in doubt in relation to a consumer living in Taiwan, it will be interpreted in the consumer's favor.

Article 21 (Governing law and jurisdiction)

  1. These Terms are governed by the laws of Japan.
  2. The Kumamoto District Court has exclusive agreed jurisdiction as the court of first instance for disputes about these Terms. This does not limit the jurisdictional rights that consumers have under law.
  3. Consumers living in Taiwan may bring a claim in a Taiwanese court under Article 47 of Taiwan's Consumer Protection Act or Article 436-9 of its Code of Civil Procedure (small claims).
